WHAT ARE CHAT ROOMS, AND DISCUSSION BOARDS?
Some sites that you visit give you the ability to communicate with them. They do this by creating areas where you can write information and have it sent via your connection to the WWW to the site you are visiting. These sorts of facilities have different names and functions (eg: discussion/noticeboards; guestbooks; chat rooms).
The most amazing of these areas are the 'Chat rooms'. Chat rooms allow you to write messages to people who are on the WWW at the same time as yourself, and allows the other persons' reply to be sent almost immediately back to you. Essentially, you can now have a conversation with anyone from anywhere in the world, in a format that actually encourages conversation and openess!
'Discussion boards' are areas where you can read messages left by other people, and leave replies to these messages, or write your own message. Unlike the chat rooms, they are not 'immediate', although some of them (eg: the Schizophrenia.com boards) post your messages immediately.
In 'Email Groups', people share their email addresses and contact each other via email.
ARE THESE AREAS SAFE?
By entering chat rooms and discussion boards there is a risk that you can download viruses to your computer. As well, most of these areas are unsupervised, meaning people can harass others, use intimidating language, and the anonymity of these areas allows people to lie about themselves and thier abilities - these are just the beginning of a long list of problems detected in these areas. Despite this, it is the strong view of the creator of this site that the proper use of these areas, discussion boards in particular, has the ability to revolutionise the way early psychosis is detected and treated for people developing psychosis. People who would have otherwise been isolated and uneasy about seeking help, can now seek out support from others, and read messages that will hopefully set them on the path to recovery.
